Calf raises

Calf raises

What you should feel?? When performed correctly, you will feel a “burn” or fatigue build up in the muscles of the legs, hip and foot. Under the foot can in some people feel very fatigued but this is normal. Be careful if you have a low back issue and ask your therapist if any concerns due to the dynamic nature of the exercise

Instructions:

  • Holding on to something for balance
  • push through the balls of your feet to raise the heels as high as you can
  • The higher you can go, the more effective the exercise will be
  • Control the lowering phase at a steady speed
  • and repeat until finished the set

Main muscles targeted:

  • Calf muscles
  • Specifically, Soleus and Gastrocnemius
  • Muscles of the foot and toes

Main benefits:

A calf raise is a very functional exercise. You use your calf muscles in many different ways over a normal day, but a calf raise will ensure you are building strength throughout the entire range of motion of the calf muscles. This can prevent injuries but also improve your ability to perform everyday tasks. Many people will lose strength in their calves at the end of range (eg: standing on tippy toes) and as they age will find it harder to regain. This is an important exercise to maintain over your lifetime.
